"Reina-Valera" 1960: The RSV in Spanish
by M. N. Jackson
In 1960 a new revision of the Reina-Valera Bible was copyrighted and published by the American Bible Society (ABS) and the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS). Despite its many paraphrased translations and wrongful changes, it was almost immediately popular, and now it is accepted by the majority as a true revision of the Valera line of Bibles. It is even held up by some as the King James Version equivalent in Spanish. It is certainly used by most King James Version believers in their Spanish-speaking ministries. This is because most English speakers, even King James Version believers, don't understand the principles of Biblical acceptance and authority. It is also because they have not seriously and diligently compared the 1960 with the 1909 nor with the King James Version. If they would make such a comparison they would realize that the 1960 has a great deal of "peculiar" readings-liberal, ecumenical, non-Valera, non-Textus Receptus readings. These immediately betray that it is not a close nor honest revision of the Valera Bible; rather an independent effort to produce a slow transition from the believed, accepted, fruit bearing Valera 1909 to the faithless scholar's preference: The critical Westcott and Hort text.
Perhaps most revealing of all its peculiarities is our recent discovery of just how much the 1960 Spanish revision was influenced by a modern English version, the Revised Standard Version of 1952. Neither the 1960 nor the men responsible for it ever acknowledged this influence, yet it is still obvious and undeniable. The 1960, in countless "revisions"-or better said, English-Spanish translations-actually copies the Revised Standard Version. Not just in literal word choice, but also many times in word order; even to the point of uncomfortable grammar and poor translation. The following table documents just some of these English to Spanish, RSV to RV1960 translations.
